Latino Behavioral Health Services
LBHS is a nonprofit, grassroots organization created to minimize the disparities in access to mental health services among the underserved Latino population of Utah. As a peer run organization, Latino Behavioral Health Services exists to enhance the mental health awareness and well-being of people with mental illness, their care-givers and loved ones through support, education, empowerment, facilitation of resources and services with competent responsiveness to cultural, socio-economic and linguistics characteristics.

Peer Support: Peer support is an important part of recovery from mental illness and substance use disorders. LBHS offers low cost peer mentorship in Spanish and English. People who are struggling with a mental/emotional condition or a substance use disorder can meet with a Certified Peer Support Specialist (CPSS). Family Members of people who are struggling with a mental/emotional condition or a substance use disorder can meet with a Family Resource Facilitator (FRF).
Therapy: LBHS offers professional, low cost therapy in Spanish and English. These services include child, individual, couples, and family counseling and substance use disorder treatment. Professional therapy helps many clients with grief from separation or loss, divorce, relationship problems, anxiety, depression, post traumatic stress disorder, bipolar disorder, and other problems.
Education/Group Classes: LBHS offers the following free and low cost classes in Spanish and English.
Peer to Peer
Peer to Peer” is a free NAMI course consisting of 8-10 sessions by and for adults living with the challenges of a mental or emotional condition. This educational program offers an environment that focuses on recovery.
Progression
Progression” is a free NAMI course for young people between the ages of 13 and 18 who are dealing with a mental or emotional condition. The name, “Progression,” alludes to its purpose of empowering young people with information and tools to advance towards their dreams and goals.
Family to Family
Family to Family” is a free NAMI course of 12 sessions for family members, partners, friends, and loved ones of adults living with a mental or emotional condition.
Emotional intelligence
Emotional intelligence is a free 6-week prevention program for children from 6 to 12 years of age whose parents and siblings are enrolled in progressions and/or basics. This program teaches children about how to talk about and handle their emotions.
Basics
Basics is a free NAMI course of 6 sessions designed for parents and caregivers of children and adolescents who live with emotional or behavioral difficulties.
CRAFT
CRAFT is a family support group/class from USARA. CRAFT is free for family members and friends concerned about someone close to them who lives with a substance use disorder.
Support Groups: LBHS offers the following free Support Groups in Spanish and English.
Unidos en La Recuperación
United in Recovery/Unidos en La Recuperación is a free support and recovery group held weekly. Here, people with mental or emotional conditions and/or substance use disorders listen and share their experiences with one another.
Survivors of Suicide Attempts (SOSA)
Survivors of Suicide Attempts (SOSA)” is a support group for suicide attempt survivors and families of people who have died by suicide. Through shared experiences, they find the tools they need to avoid future suicide attempts.
Corazon de Mujer Utah, Programa de Desarrollo, Crecimiento, y Empoderamiento Personal
Heart of Woman Utah/Corazon de Mujer is a free support group for the development, growth and empowerment of women. The group centers different themes and activities each week.
Family Support Group
This free support group is for family and friends of people who have depression, anxiety, bipolar, schizophrenia and other emotional or substance use disorders. Participants learn how to help their family member or friend in the different stages of their condition while caring for themselves and receiving support.
Public Transportations and Suicide Prevention Training:
- LBHS offers presentations about mental/emotional conditions and substance use disorders, what it is like to live a mental/emotional condition or substance use disorder and the experience of family members of those with a mental/emotional condition or substance use disorder.
- LBHS offers presentations about resources for Latinos with mental or emotional conditions or substance use disorders and their family members.
- LBHS offers “Question, Persuade, and Refer (QPR)” training. The QPR mission is to reduce suicidal behaviors and save lives by providing innovative, practical and proven suicide prevention training.
- LBHS offers “Mental Health First Aid (MHFA)” training. Mental Health First Aid teaches participants how to identify, understand and respond to signs of mental illnesses and substance use disorders in their community.
Para/Professional Development: LBHS recognizes education as a recovery tool. We proudly support our clients in becoming community partners through training to become Certified Peer Support Specialist (CPSS), Family Resource Facilitators (FRF), Case Managers and Community Leaders with scholarships through partnerships with the University of Utah/University Neighborhood Partners (UNP), the Utah Department of Substance Abuse and Mental Health (DSAMH), the Westside Leadership Institute, and others.
