USU 4-H & After School Programs
Utah State University Extension (Iron County) has 4-H Youth Development and 4-H Afterschool programs in the community and local schools. Four-H is the youth development program established for Land Grant Universities throughout the country and is housed in local County Extension Offices serving youth 8-18 years of age. General information about the 4-H program are available at Utah4-H.org.
The 4-H Afterschool Program, also known as Youth and Families with Promise program (4-H YFP), is a prevention program designed to enhance the developmental assets of at-risk youth, ages 10-14. This program targets youth (and families) who have below-average school performance, poor social skills, and/or weak family bonds, among other risk factors related to income, single-parent, or foster care families. Youth are referred to the program by school counselors, teachers, and administrators, as well as other youth-serving organizations.
While there are USU Extension offices in every county throughout Utah that offer 4-H in general, afterschool programs are not. Participants must have a connection to the school district, through housing, grandparents, foster family, and so on to get into the program.
