Lesbian and Gay Foster and Adoptive Parents: Recruiting, Assessing, and Supporting Resource

Gerald P. Mallon

Six to ten million children of lesbian, gay, and bisexual parents currently live in the United States, and one-third of lesbian households and one-fifth of gay male households have children. Despite this, some child welfare workers view gay and lesbian people as a last resort in family placement. Althoough a growing number of lesbians and gay men are applying to adopt and foster children, they remain an underused resource because of stereotypes, prejudices, and legislation that makes it difficult for gays and lesbians to forster or adopt. With a national shortfall of adoptive and foster placements, agencies need to encourage lesbian and gay applicants to come forward for children in need. Lesbian and Gay Foster and Adoptive Parents explores the myths and prejudices that influence attitudes toward lesbians and gay men as parents, examines how the development of legislation over the years has influenced perceptions of lesbians and gay men as parent, and explores ways for social workers to more effectively support lesbian and gay adopters and foster parents once they have been matched with a child or youth.

Gay Men Choosing Parenthood

Gerald P. Mallon

Gay parenting is a topic on which almost everyone has an opinion but almost nobody has any facts. Here at last is a book based on a thorough review of the literature, as well as interviews with a pioneering group of men who in the 1980s chose to become fathers outside the boundaries of a heterosexual union—through foster care, adoption, and other kinship relationships.

This book reveals how very natural and possible gay parenthood can be. What factors influence this decision? How do the experiences of gay dads compare to those of heterosexual men? How effectively do professional services such as support groups serve gay fathers and prospective gay fathers? What elements of the social climate are helpful—and hurtful? Gay Men Choosing Parenthood challenges a great deal of misinformation, showing how gay fathers from different backgrounds adapted, perceived, and constructed their options and their families.

Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Trans Foster & Adoptive Parents

Gerald P. Mallon

Provides social work practitioners with guidelines for working with lesbian, gay, bisexual, and trans people interested in fostering or adopting. Although a growing number of LGBT people are applying to foster or adopt and are successfully caring for children and youth, they remain an underutilized resource. With a shortfall of foster and adoptive placements, and a national in the USA strategy to recruit and support foster and adoptive parents, agencies need to ensure that they do not prejudice lesbian, gay, bisexual, and trans applicants from coming forward as potential foster or adoptive resources for children and youth in need.

Street Child

Justin Reed Early

"The books the world calls immoral, are the books that show the world its own shame." - Oscar Wilde

"Street Child is not for the faint of heart" - THE SEATTLE TIMES

Street Child is the shock-inspiring story of a young boy who escapes his increasingly dysfunctional and violent middle class home. Remanded into state custody at ten years old, he embarks on a journey through the foster care system only finding safety from unlikely skid-row heroes on downtown streets of Seattle and San Francisco - where children are victims and victims are considered criminals.

While dodging serial killers and predators, including a juvenile court judge who oversees his custody, these children develop familial bonds while protecting each other in an increasingly dangerous - yet invisible world. By telling these authentic stories with often times devastating outcomes, he articulates the stark reality of life on the streets for countless young people.

Many of the children in Street Child were featured in the movie STREETWISE which was nominated for an Academy Award.
